Love Drug

By Jay Berrones

From the Artist:

Love Drug is a series of visual journal entries investigating the dichotomy between science and romance. This series speculates on the idea that romanticism might very well be a short circuit when it comes to pair bonding. In fact, love has been credited to the chemical reaction that generates an increase in oxytocin. The objective of this small body of work was to invite a pragmatic approach through science so as to save from unnecessary heartache. Along the way, a question came into focus. If my ancestors historically viewed the world through a lens of mysticism before applied sciences arrived to the western world, how does a scientific approach further cross my wires?

Artist Bio:

Jay Berrones is a Chicano collage, screen printing, and editorial artist based in Mexico City, Mexico. His physical work seeks to exploit, manipulate and honor the limits presented by paper as a medium through the use of packing tape, charcoal, photo image as well as image transfers. The message of the medium itself is an ongoing critique of the opinion about the intersection of analog vs digital. Jay uses his self-taught computer knowledge to manipulate photos, create pattern designs, and even digitally mock up some pieces beforehand. “As an editorial illustrator, digital is the way of the world. I exist in both the tangible and the digital with my practice." The result is an unconscious disregard for what or if"digital" constitutes “art". Furthermore, the incorporation of digital skills only helps to sharpen the visual message.
